BEDROOM DESIGN IDEAS • with Etsy
The bedroom is the rest area of the apartment and should be a place where you feel one hundred percent comfortable. Therefore, the bedroom should be tailored to your personality and don’t cause a feeling of unrest.
Here it can help to maintain a certain basic order, e.g. in the form of minimalism.
The bedroom also plays a special role in the teaching of Feng Shui. Accordingly, it is a space of trust, intimacy and partnership as well as regeneration and should radiate security and peace.
Today I'm going to show you my bedroom, which I've just redecorated. For this purpose I have been shopping at Etsy and discovered many great shops, which I would like to introduce to you. Etsy offers many creative possibilities to design your home. The advantage of the small shops on Etsy is that the sellers sell handmade articles, unique or vintage pieces.
In this Etsy article we have already presented a selection of beautiful shops. Sustainability is also a part of the philosophy of many shops. But long story short, here are a few bedroom ideas that are guaranteed to create the right feel-good atmosphere:
Room planning
After several moves I’ve gotten into the habit of creating small room concepts with the help of Photoshop. If you have moved more than twice, you probably know it: different furniture piles up and actually you want a completely new design for every new apartment. At some point, you can't get around a little mix and match anymore. To make sure that the mix looks harmonious and not chaotic in the end, you can plan the room with moodboards or room planner apps.
If you also pay attention to harmonious and calming colours and simple ways of darkening the room, for example with opaque curtains, then nothing stands in the way of pleasant nights in your new bedroom.
Since the bedroom is a relaxation room, it should be designed rather dark overall and only be provided with light during the day.
How to Choose the Right Paint Colors for Your Bedroom
Unser Schlafzimmer in einem pastelligen Cremeweiß mit Decken in Anthrazit
How do you find the right color for your bedroom? There are several possibilities: Sometimes I just go to the hardware store to look at color charts and then decide what I like. Another possibility is to discover color trends on Adobe or Pinterest. Otherwise, the following applies to the bedroom: Dark tones convey a feeling of security and light colors have a liberating effect.
With color combinations you should stay at one intensity. So combine pastel shades with pastel shades and intense colors with intense colors. Bright and discreet, yet muted colors are good for finding peace in the bedroom. The expert tip: pastel shades! The warm shades automatically make us relax.
As you can see, we decided to add a little contrast and give the ceiling a different color. The rule here is: a high ceiling looks a bit lower with walls in contrasting colors. For low ceilings this variant is not so much suitable. Another tip: in large rooms, protruding furniture, for example like a big bed, also looks more comfortable than a small version.
Minimalism
Living minimalistically means as much as the art of omission. We all know it: the silent cries of things we own and accumulate: Fix me! Read me! Wear me again!
These are things that are of no use to us, but which give us a subliminal guilty conscience because they are a silent invitation - and in this way unconsciously rob us of energy instead of contributing positively to our everyday life.
You can read more about minimalism in our minimalism article.
Bedroom furniture
The bed is the most dominant piece of furniture in the bedroom. Therefore, a discreet model is often a good choice here. Simple variants are, for example, box beds without legs. As seen here from DEUTZKunst or UpCycleBerlin.
Just as practical are decorative boxes, baskets or crates that you can simply place next to the bed. As mentioned above, I mix my furniture types in the meantime. For this to work, not too many wood colours should be combined.
Trend furniture
Every year, manufacturers and designers present new living trends at furniture fairs. Whether furniture in light wood, textiles in velvet or accessories in the trend color of the year. This year, for example, delicate shades of pink and red are in, with tones ranging from orange to old rose.
Incidentally, pink goes well with grey tones. With terracotta, the tone looks modern, with black and metal accents such as brass or copper it looks noble and warm. A Nordic-clear living picture is created by combining it with light wood.
From a sustainability perspective, however, trendy furniture should make up the least part of the furniture. A timeless design lasts longer and is easier to integrate into new stock.
For example, my ergonomic seating ball is one such trend piece. I wanted to have a variant for in between times so that I wouldn't sit too rigidly. Good ergonomics helps to relieve the spine through targeted movement.
wooden furniture
Whether nordic, elegant or rustic natural - with furniture, walls and accessories made of wood, nature comes into the house. And that fits in with every style of living!
Not all wood is the same. Quality furniture made of wood is durable, low-polluting and made by a carpenter for a lifetime.
In the past, the rule was: all wood in the room must come from one wood species. Today, however, the overall picture is decisive. Dark woods look particularly good in harmony with black and muted tones such as grey, khaki, sand brown or aubergine. Also popular are tone-in-tone looks, where you simply trick and paint all the wooden furniture in one color, for example white.
Sustainable furniture
Anyone who wants to live and furnish sustainably will do as far as possible without furniture that is contaminated with plastics and harmful substances. An ecological living concept relies on furniture and accessories made from renewable raw materials, such as sustainable wood, bamboo and organic cotton.
The furniture should also:
come from sustainable forestry in Germany or Europe
have not gone through a long supply chain
be made to last
be treated with natural-based glazes, oils and waxes
emit no pollutants
can be safely disposed of
For eco-furniture from small manufacturers, which was made by hand, you have to dig a little deeper into your pockets. But it is worth it! In return, you also get a high-quality piece of furniture that has been tested for harmful substances and is free of allergens. This is good for the environment and for your living climate.
Sustainable bedside tables from Etsy
Ich habe mir auch nachhaltige Möbel zugelegt, z.B. von WoodekDesignEurope. Die Nachttische sind sehr hochwertig und super schick, ich bin wirklich begeistert!
Bedroom lights
For good lighting in the bedroom, it is best to combine bright reading lights next to the bed with atmospheric background light from various sources.
Design tip: Concealed lights, for example under built-in cupboards, provide indirect light and make large furniture appear to float.
With the help of light chains you can create a dreamy and cozy atmosphere.
Light sources and color temperature
If an artificial light source is used, lamps with a lower color temperature are more suitable than luminaires with a bluish color temperature because they produce warmer light and thus tend to make people feel more comfortable.
Bedroom decoration
Surround yourself with beautiful things, even in the bedroom. Personal objects, vases or pictures turn your room into an oasis of well-being and give it individual charm. Our tip: Create groups of three or more accessories and define a common feature, such as color, pattern or material.
art prints
A poster is the easiest way to bring fresh design into your home. On Etsy, for example, you can buy these here: NMinetstore. You can easily print them yourself.
Mirrors
A wall mirror hangs in almost every apartment. It makes small rooms look larger, provides more light - and is increasingly becoming a design object.
Curtains
Whether cotton or linen, plain or patterned - curtains are not only good for darkening but can also be another eye-catcher in the bedroom.
Rugs
Parquet or laminate flooring in the bedroom? Looks nice, but quickly causes cold feet. A carpet in the bedroom ensures a warm and soft step when you get up - no matter whether high pile or short pile. Plaids and extra cushions make it even more homely. I have chosen a crocheted carpet, for example locally from Germany by Tatihaekelt or from AnuszkaDesign.
Indoor plants
Houseplants provide comfort and clean the air. Decorating with plants has many advantages: they demonstrably improve the indoor climate, act as sound insulation and reduce stress levels. Above all, however, a small indoor garden makes one thing: happy!
Macramé
Macramé is one of the most popular DIY trends and has gained enormously in popularity. On Etsy there are an incredible number of macramé artists who sell beautiful works. In combination with beautiful plants, the wickerwork not only shows its decorative side, but also takes on the function of a plant or flower traffic light. The room does not appear overloaded but lively and airy.
Sustainable bedding
Restful sleep is important! And not for nothing they say: as you make your bed so you must lie on it.
Before cotton came to Europe, bedding was usually made of linen. Linen is made from the fibres of the flax plant and is considered to be a very high-quality and sustainable material.
Cooling in the summer, it also inhibits bacteria, is naturally antistatic and absorbent, linen is ideal for the bed and has a beautiful optical effect with its silky sheen and noble creasing. Etsy also has many great sustainable shops for bed linen. Our bed linen in the picture is made of 100% organic cotton.
Home office - setting up the workplace at home
A home office in the bedroom? Sometimes the lack of space doesn't allow it any other way. However, it should be possible to hide work equipment and computers. After all, nobody likes to have unfinished tasks in front of their eyes when they fall asleep.
In principle, a classic office chair is not necessarily required for healthy sitting at the desk. Seating balls, stools or simple chairs with adjustable features can also ensure a good posture.
It is important to know your own requirements. For example, a sitting ball has a high dynamic response, but during longer periods of fine-motor work, such as typing on the keyboard and mouse or a concentrated view of the monitor, it leads to a tense posture because the ball brings too much dynamic into the quiet movement.
A stool does the opposite. It tries to compensate for this "too much" dynamic and ensures a straight posture, as there are no relaxation areas available.
Audio System - Speakers for the bedroom
“Whatever your room size and application, you'll find there's a Genelec loudspeaker model that is perfectly suited to your needs.”
Last but not least, the sound should not be neglected. We have chosen GENELEC loudspeakers and therefore excellent sound in recording studio quality. The Finnish company has high standards in quality and sustainability strategies.
In addition, GENELEC scores with timeless and well thought-out design, which is compact and available in various sizes. At Thomann the cheapest model is available here, currently in anthracite for 395 euros per piece.
